News of a study of gay and straight brain scans was reported last week under headlines like:
Basically, scientists studied brain scans of 90 gay and straight men and women, and found that the gay male brains resembled straight female brains, and lesbian brains resembled straight male brains.
How exactly is that evidence of a “Gay Brain”? If the brains of gay people (regardless of gender) looked alike, and the brains of straight people (regardless of gender) looked alike, then we might have evidence of a gay brain. But that is not what the research shows. The study found similarities in the brains of people (gay and straight) who are attracted to women, and similarities in the brains of people (gay and straight) who are attracted to men.
So …My gay brain apparently looks like a straight man’s brain. What is it that makes my brain gay and his straight?? Apparently it is our sexual orientation. This strikes me as circular reasoning at its finest.
